While fasting is an integral part of Indian food culture, the accepted diet for such fasts is called a 'faraal' and is a matter of convention. One such convention is dhanya-faraal which means 'grain diet'. While normally grains are avoided during fasts, this diet permits the consumption of some grains with some restrictions on the recipe used. Tandalachi Soji falls in this category. Rice is simply cooked in water with cumin seeds, turmeric powder and clarified butter. Eaten hot with some lime pickle, this nutritious dish is even light enough for the convalescent.
