The Rai Awla or the smaller version of the Indian Gooseberry is an amazing source of Vitamin C and was always seasonally included in the diet. The Rai Avlayacha Saar is the Maharashtrian version of the South Indian rasam. The fruit is cut, ground and boiled with garlic, pepper, green chillies and some tempered spices like coriander seeds, cumin seeds, red chillies and turmeric. Fresh coriander leaves are used as a garnish for this sumptuous, nutritious and flavorful saar which can be consumed as a soup or as a substitute for an aamti.
