Maswadi are traditionally prepared cooked bits of chickpea flour with a spicy stuffing that are dipped in a specially prepared spicy curry before they are consumed. The stuffing is prepared using onions, coconut, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, red chilli powder and a varhadi masala blend and some other basic ingredients. The chickpea flour cover is flavoured with a ginger-garlic-green chillies paste, turmeric powder, asafoetida and some salt. The spicy curry has a base of onions and fresh coconut, which has been flavoured with garlic, salt, red chilli powder and some more varhadi masala. In the Maswadi recipe, one can replace the varhadi masala with kanda-lasun masala, garam masala or kala masala.
