गोळे भात / Gole Bhat

Steamed Rice With Spiced Balls of Ground Chickpeas

Gole Bhat is a traditional Maharashtrian rice preparation with spiced balls of ground and cooked chickpeas that is popular in the Vidharbha region of the state. The coarsely ground chickpeas are flavoured with a ginger-green chilli paste, powdered red chillies and turmeric, salt and some yoghurt. Soaked rice is cooked in some water along with a tempering of whole spices. Balls of the thick chickpea paste are subsequently added and allowed to cook with the rice on a medium-low flame until Gole Bhat is ready to be served.
