Chavlichi Bhaji is a traditional legume-based, spicy, semi-dry preparation that is commonly served as a side dish in Maharashtrian households. This simple preparation of black eyed peas is perked up with onions, tomatoes, coconut and coriander leaves. Ginger-garlic paste, garam masala, red chilli powder, coriander powder, jaggery, salt, cumin and mustard seeds add other elements of flavour to this preparation. Chavlichi Bhaji is commonly consumed with polis (unleavened flatbread), phulkas (small puffed bread) and bhakris (coarse flatbread).
